Time Adverbs (Zeitadverbien)

Time adverbs tell when or how long something happens. In German, they can be used to indicate present, past, future, regularity, or frequency.

• heute (today), jetzt (now), and bald (soon) are used to focus on the present or near future.
• abends, vormittags, and winters express regularity (in the evenings, in the mornings, in winter).
• danach (afterwards), später (later), and in Zukunft (in the future) discuss what happens next.
• vorgestern (the day before yesterday), neulich (recently), and niemals (never) are used for specific or indefinite times in the past.
• wann (when) and wie lange (how long) are often used in questions.

• Ich gehe abends spazieren.
• Wir sehen uns später.
• Vorgestern war das Wetter schlecht.
• Demnächst werde ich umziehen.
• Wie lange bleibst du hier?
• Neulich habe ich ihn getroffen.

Manner Adverbs (Adverbien der Art und Weise)

These adverbs describe how something happens.

• schnell (quickly), langsam (slowly), leicht (easily), and schlecht (badly) detail how an action is performed.
• stark, sehr, wirklich, echt, and total (very, really, totally) intensify the meaning of adjectives or verbs.

Examples:

• Er läuft schnell.
• Du sprichst echt gut Deutsch!
• Sie arbeitet langsam.
• Der Film war total gut.
• Ich habe schlecht geschlafen.

Place Adverbs (Adverbien des Ortes)

Place adverbs talk about where something happens or the position of nouns.

• hier (here), da (there), dort (there, further away), drüben (over there), zuhause (at home) show location.
• drinnen (inside), oben (upstairs/above), unten (downstairs/below), vorne (in front), hinten (at the back) give relative directions.
• wo (where) is often used in questions about place.

• Ich bin hier.
• Die Tasche ist unten.
• Wir treffen uns drüben.
• Ist jemand zuhause?
• Der Hund liegt vorne im Garten.
